About This Project

On Friday, August 7th, 2026, a brief ceremony was held to honor and recognize past and present US Armed Service Members who received the Purple Heart Medal.  This is a military decoration awarded for “being wounded or killed in any action against an enemy of the United States or as a result of an act of any such enemy or opposing armed forces”.  The Military Order of the Purple Heart was chartered by Congress in 1932, and the Richard E. Cowan Chapter of the MOPH (Chapter 558) is based in Wichita.  The guest speaker was Purple Heart Recipient retired Army Master Sergeant Jason Hartley.  Buglers Don Hansen and John Noonan played the National Anthem, Amazing Grace and Taps.  The rifle salute was provided by the American Legion Post 4 Honor Guard.  Photos are courtesy of Mike Nash.
