During World War II, necessities such as gas, ammunition, and oil needed to be transported by boat. Largely, these ships were transporting these wartime necessities to the frontlines unarmed. The US Navy Armed Guards were used to protect the ship’s cargo and aiding in the war efforts.
The US Navy Armed Guard and the US Merchant Marine Memorials honor the sacrifices of the crews and ships used to transport necessities during wartime. The memorial is an anchor atop a limestone mound; the initials “USN” for the United States Navy, and “USMM” for United States Merchant Marine, decorate the anchor. Carved into the limestone, the memorial reads: “They that go down to the sea in ships, That do business in great waters, These see the works of the Lord, And his wonders in the deep.”
