SUMMARY:2026 Commemoration of Purple Heart Day
DESCRIPTION:On August 7th\, 2026 at 11:00 am\, the Richard E. Cowan Chapter 558 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and Veterans Memorial Park will host an event to honor and commemorate recipients of the Purple Heart Medal.  The ceremony will be held near the Park’s Purple Heart Memorial. \nThe Purple Heart Medal is awarded to members of the armed forces of the U.S. who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy and posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who are killed in action or die of wounds received in action. It is specifically a combat decoration. \nThe organization now known as the “Military Order of the Purple Heart\,” was formed in 1932 for the protection and mutual interest of all who have received the decoration. Composed exclusively of Purple Heart recipients\, it is the only veterans service organization comprised strictly of “combat” veterans. \nThe event will include a bugler playing the National Anthem\, recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance\, Chaplain’s Invocation and brief remarks by Guest Speaker MSG Jason Hartley.  After a 3-volley rifle salute by American Legion Post 4\, the bugler will sound Taps to conclude the ceremony.  The event is open to the public\, but seating will not be provided.  Guests who wish to be seated are welcome to bring their own chairs.

SUMMARY:2026 Commemoration of V-J (Victory over Japan) Day - 81st Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:At 10:00 am on September 2nd\, 2026\, the Veterans Memorial Park Board of Wichita will hold a commemoration of the 81st anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ Day)\, at the Park’s World War II Memorial.  Since Victory in Europe (VE Day) had already occurred earlier (in May 1945)\, VJ Day also commemorates the end of World War II.\nA Bugler will play the National Anthem to start the ceremony.  After the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance\, there will be an invocation and wreath-laying\, followed by brief remarks from the Master of Ceremonies.  The Bugler will then conclude the ceremony by sounding Taps.\nThe public is invited to attend but as this will be a brief event\, no chairs will be provided.  Guests who wish to be seated should bring their own lawn chairs.

SUMMARY:Commemoration of 9-11 Attack and Global War On Terror (GWOT) - 2026
DESCRIPTION:On September 11th\, 2026 at 10:00 am\, the Veterans Memorial Park Board of Wichita will host a ceremony to commemorate the events of 9/11/2001 and pay tribute to the Veterans who served in the subsequent Global War on Terror.  Held at the Park’s Operation Freedom Memorial\, the event will begin with the presentation of the Colors by a color guard\, National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance.  This is followed by an Invocation and speaker’s remarks.  After the playing of Amazing Grace\, the American Legion Post 4 Honor Guard will fire a 3-volley salute.  The event will conclude with the bugler(s) sounding TAPS for those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.  This event is open to the public\, but since there will be limited seating guests who wish to sit may want to bring their own lawn chairs.

DESCRIPTION:On September 18th at 10:00 am\, the Veterans Memorial Park Board will commemorate National POW/MIA Recognition Day at Wichita’s Veterans Memorial Park.  On this day\, our nation remembers and honors those Americans who were prisoners of war\, and those who served but never returned home. \nThe event will take place at the Park’s Flag Pavilion.  Following the National Anthem\, Pledge of Allegiance and Invocation\, Guest Speaker Rick Lowrey (representing Rolling Thunder Inc.) will speak about the history and significance of this event.  After the speaker’s remarks\, a bugler will play Amazing Grace\, followed by a 3-volley rifle salute and the sounding of Taps. \nThe public is invited to attend and limited seating will be provided.  Guests who do not wish to stand may bring their own lawn chairs.
