On a cold and windy morning, the 80th anniversary of the Japanese attack on the US military at Pearl Harbor and other facilities on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, a few dozen people gathered in WVMP. They gathered at the Pearl Harbor and World War Two Memorials to honor those lost in that attack and the survivors whose lives were forever altered. The ceremony was held at 8 a.m. local time to commemorate how the attack came at 7:58 a.m. (Hawaii time) on a calm Sunday morning.
The ceremony began with the ringing of the Park ceremonial bell. Bugles Across America members John Noonan and Don Hansen then played the “Star Spangled Banner.”
Outgoing WVMP Chairman of the Board Bryson Allen addressed the crowd regarding the attack causing America’s entry into World War Two, the lives lost in the attack, and the importance of remembering “The Day That Will Live in Infamy.”
Incoming WVMP Chairman John Offerman then laid a ceremonial wreath at the Pearl Harbor Memorial. All veterans in attendance saluted as the trumpeters played “The Navy Hymn (Eternal Father Strong to Save).
The ceremony concluded with a blessing provided by WVMP Chaplain Charles Eaton and the trumpeters playing “Echo Taps.”
