About This Project

Known as “Victory over Japan Day,” or simply “V-J Day,” the term is used to refer to September 2, 1945. On that date, the Empire of Japan’s formal surrender took place aboard the U.S.S. Missouri, anchored in Tokyo Bay.  (SOURCE: History.com, V-J Day.)

WVMP held a brief ceremony at the Park’s flag pavilion commemorating this historical event including:

  • Playing “The Star Spangled Banner” on the trumpets
  • Chaplain
  • Presentation by WVMP Vice Chairman “Doc” Holsey who related what his father, former MM3 A.D. Holsey USN had always told him about that day. A.D. Holsey was on the USS Idaho anchored right next to the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay and witnessed from a distance the surrender signing ceremony on the USS Missouri.
  • Playing “Echo Taps” on the trumpets
