About This Project

On August 9, 1945, U.S. forces detonated an atomic bomb over Nagasaki, Japan, days after an initial bombing over Hiroshima. These events brought an end to the second World War. Following the second Japan bombing, the U.S.S. Wichita was sent to Japan to liberate prisoners of war, earning it the moniker, the last “treaty cruiser”.

 

The warship earned 13 Battle Stars during World War II from 1939 to 1947. Lining the Arkansas River, the stone monument symbolizes the original large boat and its service during its eight years of service.
